#jecoudsmagarderobecapsule2017 : le bilan

Et voilà. La boucle est bouclée, le défi Je couds ma garde robe capsule 2017 est terminé. Un an à coudre pour moi, à tenter des trucs nouveaux, à découdre, à recoudre, à être en retard pour poster sur le blog... 12 vêtements, certains réussis, d'autres pas du tout... Je suis vraiment ravie d'avoir participé à ce beau projet lancé par Clotilde qui a rassemblé des centaines de couturières (et peut-être quelques couturiers aussi ?) et nous a encouragés à nous aventurer dans des territoires couturesques inexplorés. Cette année j'ai cousu mon premier jean, mon premier maillot de bain, mes premiers sous-vêtements, mon premier manteau. J'ai appris à faire des ajustements de pantalon, à broder un motif, à rendre une veste reversible. Je me suis cassé les dents sur de mauvais choix de tissu, des motifs un peu osés, et des plis rebelles. Bref, j'ai autant appris cette dernière année qu'en 5 ans de couture solitaire et autodidacte auparavant.

Le rythme imposé d'un vêtement par mois m'a vraiment poussée à m'organiser et à anticiper, encore une première pour moi! J'avoue que j'ai fini un peu sur les rotules, c'était bien soutenu, surtout avec le boulot et les deux mecs à gérer (et ce n'est pas forcément le plus petit qui a besoin de plus de gestion... Celles qui ont des maris se reconnaitront peut-être...!). Maintenant j'ai hâte de reprendre un rythme un peu plus cool, et aussi de coudre un peu pour les autres. Le "selfish sewing" c'est sympa, mais le fiston n'a plus rien à se mettre !

So here we are, one year on, 12 garments later, this capsule wardrobe challenge is a wrap. It has been great, I feel I have learnt so much and it has encouraged me to push myself and try new things, with the support and motivation which comes with being part of a fantastic sewing community here and on IG. This year I made my first pair of jeans, my first swimwear and underwear, my first coat. I learnt how to fit trousers, how to embroider fabric, how to make a jacket reversible. There was a lot of unpicking, bad fabric choices, awkward pleats and crazy prints.

At times it has been hard to stick to the rhythm of one item per month, especially with the rest of life (work, kids, husband...) going on in the background, but having a deadline has really pushed me to get organised (which really doesn't come naturally to me!). So now that it is over I am looking forward to taking it easy for a while, and also to sewing for someone other than myself! My mini monkey's wardrobe is looking desperately empty...

En janvier il y a eu le Mandy Boat Tee de Tessuti (patron gratuit), dans la catégorie "Haut en jersey"

J'en ai cousu deux, celui-ci en jersey à rayures irregulières, et un autre en maille merinos. Une super valeur sûre que je porte presque tous les jours, confortable, pratique, avec une petite touche d'originalité. Le basique parfait.

In January we had Tessuti's Mandy Boat Tee (free pattern), in the "knit top" category

I ending up sewing two of them, this one in an irregular striped jersey, and another one in a cosy merino knit. Both are on constant rotation, it's a great staple, cosy, practical, with a little bit of style. Total winner!

En février la jupe 1001 Perles d'Ivanne S dans la catégorie "Jupe"

Un flop complet pour ma part, trop grande et mauvais choix de tissu. Ce tencel est mal passé au lavage, et était trop raide pour ce type de forme. J'ai donné la jupe, mais j'ai gardé le patron. Je vois de très belles versions passer sur IG régulièrement et je ne desespère pas d'en coudre une version potable un jour.

In February we had the 1001 Perles skirt from Ivanne S in the "skirt" category

Complete fail! Too large, bad fabric choice, altogether quite ugly... this tencel didn't enjoy being washed very much, and it was far too stiff for the pattern. But I am not giving up on it yet, might try another version in a lightweight twill at some point.

En mars le jean Morgan de Closet Case Patterns, dans la catégorie "Pantalon"

Une grosse fierté et un grand pas de franchi en couture ! Je le porte régulièrement, même s'il est un peu grand. Cette année je tente le Ginger. En passant, si la couture denim vous tente, Closet Case solde tous ses patrons de jeans à -30% jusque fin février pour vous encourager à vous lancer ;)

A very proud moment and a huge first in my sewing journey! I do wear them regularly, even if they are a bit big for me. This year I will be trying out the Ginger, Closet Case's skinny jeans pattern. And by the way this February is #nofearjeansmonth so Closet Case have discounted all their jeans patterns with 30% off if you fancy giving it a go!

J'adore le tissu La Modette et je la porte régulièrement en mi-saison.

It gets a lot of wear, I love the antelope fabric ^^

En mai la blouse Alice de Tessuti, dans la catégorie "Haut en chaine et trame"

Mon premier essai (très simpliste) de broderie sur un vêtement, mais qui m'a encouragée pour me lancer le mois suivant. J'aime beaucoup la forme de ce petit haut et ma boule de cristal me dit qu'il y en aura sûrement d'autres cette année (ou la suivante - ma boule de cristal n'est pas très précise sur les délais).

In May we had a double gauze Tessuti Alice top, in the "woven top" category

This was my first (albeit super basic) attempt at embroidery, but it got me started and gave me the momentum for the next garment. I love the shape of this top, and can see a few more of these being sewn up in the not-to-distant future.

En juin la robe Aréli de République du chiffon, catégorie "Robe"

Mon projet préféré de cette année je crois, celui qui colle le plus à mon style et à ce que je recherche dans un vêtement. Le plastron brodé a plutôt bien tourné, et ce patron est super facile à coudre et à porter. (Note pour la prochaine fois, ajouter des poches !)

This is hands down my favourite make of this year. I love how the embroidered bib turned out, it's such an easy sew, and it is soooooo comfortable! Everything I look for in a garment. The next time I will definitely add pockets though ;)

Mauvais choix de tissu et patron un peu décevant - plus cellulite à gogo... J'ai vraiment envie de supprimer ce message du blog, j'ai des sueurs froides à chaque fois que je tombe dessus! Mais côté positif une grosse envie de continuer à coudre mes propres maillots ! Cette année je vise le Sophie de Closet Case Patterns - bien couvrant et gainant !

It is pretty bad!! Wrong fabric, disappointing pattern, and far too much cellulite... it does make me cringe to look at the photos. But on the plus side I do want to carry on sewing my own swimwear, but I will go for something a little bit more structured to hold everything in (like the Closet Case Sophie).

Un projet de dernière minute après avoir abandonné le Maritime de Grainline Studio, mais un bon patron qui donne envie de récidiver. Je réfléchis aussi aux moyens de réhabiliter le Maritime en perdition...

It was a last minute sew after the Grainline Studio Maritime I had planned went badly wrong. that said Golda is a great pattern, and I will probably sew more of them. And I haven't completely given up on the Maritime, just thinking of ways to save them.

En septembre l'ensemble Picpus et Bel Air d'Atelier sur le fil / Rebecca Meurin, dans la catégorie "Lingerie"

Le bas a été très bidouillé pour arriver à un résultat convenable mais le haut est une vraie découverte : très facile à coudre et super confortable ! J'ai adapté le patron en brassière que je porte régulièrement au boulot et j'en suis ravie. Il m'en faudrait 2-3 de plus. J'ai aussi hâte de me lancer dans de la lingerie plus sophistiquée bientôt, peut-être le Fenway de Orange lingerie cette année?

In September we had the Picpus bra and Bel-Air knickers from Atelier sur le fil, in the "underwear" category

The bottom had to be majorly tweeked for fit, but the top was a revelation: this little bra is so easy to sew and so comfortable! I made a sports version with cross straps at the back, which I wear to work, and it is just perfect for the job. I need to sew a few more! And I would like to try slighlty more sophisticated models, with more structure and support, and I quite fancy Orange lingerie's Fenway bra.

Super patron, j'en suis très contente. Elle n'a pas encore été beaucoup portée parce que le tissu est un peu léger, mais elle le sera dès que les beaux jours arriveront !

A great pattern, i'm really happy with it. It hasn't been worn much so far because the fabric is a bit thin for winter, but I can see it getting a lot of wear in the warmer part of the year.

Une improvisation totale, version réversible en jeans recyclés et imprimé wax, et une belle surprise ! Je l'adore, avec en plus la satisfaction d'avoir sauvé les jeans de mon mari d'une mort certaine.

A total impro with this reversible upcycled denim / wax print look, and a very happy accident! I love it, and it always makes me happy to save a few of my husband's old jeans from ending up in landfill.

Encore une petite révolution couture pour moi, je n'aurais jamais cru pouvoir réussir un projet aussi complexe, mais il est fini, portable, et il me va ! De quoi faire le plein de motivation couture pour 2018 ;)

In December we had Closet Case Pattern's Kelly anorak, in the "coat" category

Another sewing first, I really didn't think I could ever pull off such a complex garment, but it worked out! It is finished, wearable, and it even fits! A big motivation  and confidence boost for 2018 :)

 

Cette année de couture m'a vraiment permis de rénover et de repenser ma garde-robe, cousue main ou non. Il y a quelques jours j'ai fait un grand tri et n'ai gardé que les vêtements qui me donnent le sourire (c'est-à-dire pas grand chose!) avec pour projet de planifier mes coutures pour remplir les "trous", et de porter de plus en plus de fait maison. A terme j'aimerais tricoter mes propres chaussette, et pourquoi pas fabriquer mes chaussures !

En 2018 je vais essayer de ne pas acheter de nouveaux tissus ou patrons, mais d'utiliser ce que j'ai en stock, et de réfléchir avec soin à mes besoins au-delà de cette année pour mieux planifier et acheter après. Ca tombe bien il y a des filles qui ont eu la même idée et ont lancé un hashtag dédié sur IG! > #makeyourstash si ça vous dire de rejoindre le mouvement ;)

Je me donne un petit break de couture, le temps de recharger les batteries, de faire un grand coup de ménage (et oui en 2017 il a fallu ajuster les priorités pour maintenir le rythme niveau couture, et, quel dommage, c'est le ménage qui en a pris un coup !), et de réorganiser la maison façon Marie Kondo. Mais ce n'est que pour repartir de plus belle après !

#jecoudsmagarderobecapsule2017 a changé ma façon de coudre et de porter mes vêtements, et petit-à-petit je me construis une garde-robe dont je suis fière et qui me rend heureuse. Je me suis aperçue que rien n'était hors de portée à condition d'être motivé, de prendre son temps et de ne pas avoir peur de défaire, et ça c'est de l'invincibilité couturesque ! Un grand merci à Clo et à la très positive et créative communauté couture sur Instagram. Que de belles inspiration et de superbes garde-robes capsules ont vu le jour par le biais de ce défi ! Sewing is our superpower ;)

This year of sewing really pushed me to update and rethink my wardrobe. A few days ago I had a sort out and only kept the clothes that make me happy, and there were very few! So the aim now is to plan ahead to fill the gaps that have come to light, and to wear more and more handmade. I would love to start knitting own socks, and making my own shoes too!

In 2018 I will try to curb my crazy fabric-shopping habits, and to use up the stash of both material and patterns that I have built up over the years. Hopefully this will enable me to make more considerate, better purchasing choices thereafter. The great thing is that a couple of Instagram sewers have launched a dedicated hashtag for destashing your fabrics in 2018, so come and join us if you fancy it, it's all happening at #makeyourstash :)

So for now I am having a little sewing break, to recharge the batteries, clean the house (well, there wasn't much time left for housework with all this sewing in 2017) and declutter Marie Kondo style. 

This capsule wardrobe challenge has definitely changed my way of sewing and wearing clothes. I am starting to build a wardrobe which makes me proud, happy, and comfortable in my body. I realised that anything was possible with enough motivation, time and patience: sewing invincibility in fact! This year has also been amazing because of this great, positive, online sewing community which provides endless inspiration and support. So many encouragements and beautiful capsule wardrobes came to be, thanks to this challenge! Sewing is definitely our superpower.
